Silk is made all over Thailand but Buriram, Khonkaen and Surin are probably the best-known provinces for high quality, traditional silk. It is normally made by the women of the villages for personal use but, as demand for this self-indulgent fabric has grown, it is now also made as a gift for visitors and for sale in small quantities.

To hand-spin the silk for a piece this size usually takes two days. The thread is then hand-dyed and, finally it is woven on a traditional hand-loom at the rate of about one metre per day.
